Mountain Lake Lodge
Nestled among the Allegheny Mountains in southwest Virginia, Mountain Lake Lodge sits at an elevation of 3874 feet. Sprawling across 2600 acres of rolling mountains and dense hardwood forests, it is surrounded by a rich history. Evidence of Native American presence in the area for over 10,000 years can be found through various Indian village sites, burial grounds, and artifacts.
Initially built as a wooden lodge for stagecoach travelers, Mountain Lake Lodge was reconstructed in 1936 using locally-sourced quartz-rich sandstone.

As I took a moment to assess the situation, it became apparent that my son and I were experiencing completely different realities. Everything seemed tangible and real to me; I even had conversations with people around me while waiting at the carving station. It was as if we were moving through events in a compressed timeline, jumping back and forth between past and present. This became even more evident when my son mentioned a conversation he overheard while I was away – a waiter detailing his interaction with the couple who were sitting behind me. But when I had observed that area earlier, there was no couple but instead a family sitting there. We were experiencing vastly different things in time at the same time. Suddenly, my earlier exchange with the waitress about clearing plates made much more sense.
