Sego Canyon, Grand County, Utah: N32°01'16"N | 109°41'43"W

Sego Canyon Rock Art Interpretive Site

Is the hike to the Sego Canyon pictographs long?

Nope! You can see them right from the parking area. There are some right in front of you and then some others just to your right around the rock that sort of sticks out and there are a few behind you on the other side of the road. Less than half a mile for all of it, for sure.

Barrier Style

Found primarily in Utah, the Barrier Canyon Style of pictographs is a unique form of rock "art." Created using red ochre or iron oxide, these panels offer enigmatic depictions and glimpses of a forgotten significance that leave a lasting impression on the landscape. Dating back to approximately 1500 to 7000 years ago, they provide a window into the past.

From the Book

As I approached the “spectacular” panel, my mind conjured up the words “vision quest.” The closer I got to this mystical rock formation, the more I felt a connection to men from a time long ago. It was as if their spirits were still wandering in this space, and I could sense them surrounding me. The feeling was so intense that I began snapping photo after photo of the left rock face, its counterpart on the right, and the space between them. I couldn’t shake off the feeling that there was something hidden in those images. Yet, when I looked at my photos, all I could see was the landscape in front of me. It seemed impossible, but the feeling persisted despite the lack of evidence in my photographs.
